Teaching young English students the art of Petrykivka painting

Children from the English town of Calstock had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the art of Petrykivka painting, which is inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

Through a Zoom conference, 38 primary school pupils from Stoke Climsland Primary School joined an online workshop to create a flower in the Petrykivka style. The lesson was conducted by Olena Danyleiko, a teacher at the Municipal Institution “Petrykivka Children’s Art School named after T. Ya. Pata.”

A sheet of paper, five colors, a few brushes and cotton swabs, a bit of patience — and each participant of this online meeting ended up with a beautiful artwork to keep as a memory. Traditional “tsybulyky” (onion motifs) and kalyna berries were especially loved by the young English students. “Thank you so much” could be heard many times through the screen!

This experience is truly valuable and once again proves that we are on the right path. And the distance of 3,186 kilometers no longer feels intimidating — it turns out it does not divide us at all!

We are grateful to the Petrykivka Community (Nataliia Kovalenko and Lidiia Mozhna) for organizing this event and inviting us to participate.

Special thanks go to the interpreter of the workshop, Viktoriia Husak (Nalyvaiko), who not only translated the lesson but also facilitated lively interaction with the children, engaging them fully and helping everyone successfully complete their artworks.

We would like to remind you that on November 18, 2024, an Agreement on the Development of Friendly Relations was signed between the Petrykivka Community and the Calstock Community (United Kingdom), primarily focusing on cooperation in the field of culture. This project was initiated and implemented with the support of the NGO “WOMEN Plus.”
